The YouthNet Program, coordinated by Family Health International, announces the publication of two new YouthLens research briefs and a programmatic tool for working with the private sector.
- YouthLens No. 8 – Abstinence and Delayed Sexual Initiation – is now available. Promoting abstinence is an important strategy that can help delay sexual activity, but complementary messages are needed for those who are sexually active. This research brief is available at http://www.fhi.org/en/Youth/YouthNet/Publications/YouthLens+English.htm
- YouthLens No. 9 – Information and Communications Technology – has been published. Technology resources increasingly link professionals working with reproductive health and HIV prevention programs in developing countries. These same resources – e-mail, CD-ROMs, listservs, the Internet, radio, and television – hold great promise for reaching youth as well. Read about these resources and how they can be applied to youth health issues at http://www.fhi.org/en/Youth/YouthNet/Publications/YouthLens+English.htm
- Private-Sector Assessment Tool. This handbook serves as a guide for conducting a technical assessment of the potential for private-sector youth reproductive health interventions. You can access this handbook online at http://www.fhi.org/en/Youth/YouthNet/ProgramsAreas/PrivateSector.htm. To receive notifications of YouthNet publications and other information on youth reproductive health and HIV prevention, please send an email to youthnetpubs@fhi.org with the subject line: Electronic subscription.David Hock

Human Resource Management Rapid Assessment Tool for HIV/AIDS Environments: A Guide for Strengthening HRM Systems
A strong human resource management (HRM) system is critical to ensuring that the necessary human resources are in place to deliver HIV-related services. Using the HRM-HIV Tool, managers can generate successful strategies for retaining and recruiting staff, minimizing the infection rate among health care workers, and improving organizational morale and performance. The tool includes instructions for assessing an HRM system’s performance and interpreting the results, an assessment instrument with 21 components, and guidelines for setting priorities and planning improvements. Paperback available in English.A Guide to Planning Local Government Health Services: The Matching Grant Program in the Philippines This step-by-step training manual and facilitation guide shares the approach used in the Philippines to help Local Government Units to assess unmet needs for essential health services and to plan and implement interventions. New Issues of The Manager English Editions
“Creating a Work Climate That Motivates Staff and Improves Performance,” Volume 11, No. 3 of The Manager
All managers, even those working in resource-poor environments and large organizations can produce better results if they strive to improve work climate. This issue of The Manager outlines the connections among work climate, employee motivation, and performance. It presents a way to assess work climate and offers leadership and management practices that managers can use on a daily basis to improve climates that demotivate employees. The accompanying case scenario may be used for staff development and training.“Achieving Functional HIV/AIDS Services through Strong Community and Management Support,” Volume 11, No. 4 of The Manager
This issue of The Manager focuses on designing and improving a package of HIV-related services using a conceptual framework called the Functional Service Delivery Point. Managers use the framework to identify characteristics that make HIV-related services functional in their clinics or districts, identify service-delivery gaps, and make plans to strengthen community and management support for comprehensive, integrated services. The accompanying case scenario may be used for staff development and training. The Manager (Russian edition)

Management and Organizational Sustainability Tool (MOST): A Facilitators’ Guide
MOST is a participatory, rapid assessment process for identifying an organization’s management needs and making concrete plans for improvement. MOST has helped organizations in Africa, Asian, Latin America, and the United States, to make significant changes in their management systems and practices, resulting in improved services and strengthened sustainability. This revised and expanded guide provides all the information for a successful experience with MOST, including complete session plans and all materials, both in print and on CD-ROM, for the participants’ binder.Going to Scale in Planning Multisectoral HIV/AIDS Programs
The process presented in this guide will help transform the way people and institutions respond to the AIDS epidemic. Intended for facilitators, decision-makers, and planners, this book presents a process for turning national HIV/AIDS strategic plans into a set of action plans. Using the approach set out in this guide, cross-sectoral teams craft an operational plan for going to scale, develop a detailed budget, and form a partnership committed to carrying out the plan. Checklists, country examples, facilitation tips, and references make this book a practical tool for forging and preparing to implement national multisectoral plans destined for support by national governments and international agencies. The Manager (upcoming English editions, working titles)
